Algarve Shatters Tourism Records in 2024
The Algarve, Portugal's southernmost region known for its stunning coastline and sunny climate, has achieved a historic milestone in 2024. According to the Algarve Regional Tourism Authority (RTA), the region's tourist accommodations welcomed an unprecedented 5.2 million visitors, the highest number ever recorded.
In a testament to the region's growing appeal, Faro's Gago Coutinho International Airport also experienced its busiest year yet, with passenger numbers soaring to over 9.8 million, surpassing all previous records. This impressive feat underscores the Algarve's burgeoning reputation as a top-tier travel destination.
The remarkable achievements of 2024 reflect a robust 2.6% increase in visitor numbers compared to the previous year. This growth is attributed to a rise in both resident visitors, which saw a 1.3% increase, and non-resident tourists, which experienced a 3% boost. These figures highlight the Algarve's magnetic allure for both domestic and international travellers.
In addition to the influx of guests, the National Statistics Institute (INE) revealed preliminary data showing that overnight stays in the Algarve rose by 1.9% compared to 2023, amounting to a total of 20.7 million overnight stays. This uptick signifies the region's sustained popularity and the continued confidence of tourists in choosing the Algarve as their preferred holiday destination.
Golf tourism also contributed to the region's success, with a record 1.46 million rounds of golf played on the Algarve's renowned courses in 2024. This marks a 5% increase compared to the previous year, with October (179,000 rounds), April (162,000 rounds), and March (153,000 rounds) emerging as the peak months for golf enthusiasts.
André Gomes, President of the Algarve Regional Tourism Authority, expressed his pride in the region's accomplishments. “The Algarve is one of the most complete tourist destinations in Europe” he remarked. He went on to point out that the records achieved in 2024 reflect the unwavering confidence of tourists in the Algarve and underscore the positive impact of tourism on both the regional and national economy.
As the Algarve continues to break new ground in tourism, it solidifies its standing as a premier destination, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and cultural experiences that draw visitors from around the globe.
